My husband just gave me an iPhone 5. WOW my first smart phone but the best part.... The box fits Pigma pens perfectly! So, here's how I spent yesterday afternoon. First I had to remove all of this stuff from the inside of the box. I had to use a knife to loosen it,<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--wjQDI16kV4/Uf7UA2HldzI/AAAAAAAAAng/4YnSAssj8V4/s640/blogger-image--834180097.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/--wjQDI16kV4/Uf7UA2HldzI/AAAAAAAAAng/4YnSAssj8V4/s640/blogger-image--834180097.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Then I had to scrape off the sticky-glue-residue stuff. This is not good for your manicure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EeX_c29gUC0/Uf7UCvtCMqI/AAAAAAAAAnw/ySmPd71OO3c/s640/blogger-image-725671075.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EeX_c29gUC0/Uf7UCvtCMqI/AAAAAAAAAnw/ySmPd71OO3c/s640/blogger-image-725671075.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Next I photocopied a Zentangled ensemble and cut a piece to fit into the bottom of the box. I used Mat medium to stick it down and put a layer of mat medium on top to seal it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wDn4GP3CPkk/Uf7UBzfn4vI/AAAAAAAAAno/LlgiBy6TcXs/s640/blogger-image-93907275.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wDn4GP3CPkk/Uf7UBzfn4vI/AAAAAAAAAno/LlgiBy6TcXs/s640/blogger-image-93907275.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
The top was more involved because it had a shiny surface with pictures on it. I painted gesso over the top and allowed it to dry. Since I'm impatient I used a blowdryer to speed up the process. Then I cut a pice of the photocopied zentangle and wallpapered the box with it. I used mat medium to adhere and to seal it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-q5buzloB-PU/Uf7UEVYV-pI/AAAAAAAAAoA/8i3U595biRQ/s640/blogger-image-1749985376.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-q5buzloB-PU/Uf7UEVYV-pI/AAAAAAAAAoA/8i3U595biRQ/s640/blogger-image-1749985376.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-I2qlhhzGRuE/Uf7UDkB4r7I/AAAAAAAAAn4/NT57xyZvJpA/s640/blogger-image--505458738.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-I2qlhhzGRuE/Uf7UDkB4r7I/AAAAAAAAAn4/NT57xyZvJpA/s640/blogger-image--505458738.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ta Da! Now my husband thinks he should get an iPhone 5 so that I can make another pen box....which might lead to the need to buy more pens!</div>

Not that Providence RI wasn't nice, but Manchester just feels like our quilting home-away-from-home! I wish I had taken more pictures of the smiling faces on the students, teachers, vendors, and volunteers that all band together to make MQX Quilt Festival such a wonderful event. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I was blessed with a full teaching schedule of six classes. My students were all fabulous! Not a grumpy face in the bunch ....okay one grumpy face but out of about 150 students that's not so bad.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">My classes were a combination of "hands-on" where each student has their own sewing machine to work on. Lecture/Demo - they get to listen to me and watch me quilt out the patterns. And Drawing - 4 hours of drawing fun that can be applied to quilting!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Here are some hands on students! Some students were very new to frame quilting and others were accustomed to working with computerized machines and were trying out freemotion quilting! Here they are....concentrating! They all did a fabulous job!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z4b-qTJlURA/UW_sLTix_9I/AAAAAAAAAiY/8H3TRmwBLfs/s1600/DSCN3075.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Z4b-qTJlURA/UW_sLTix_9I/AAAAAAAAAiY/8H3TRmwBLfs/s400/DSCN3075.JPG" width="300" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zdIYjrdrFto/UW_sH7E_rKI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/HJBt72Fiu-U/s1600/DSCN3076.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zdIYjrdrFto/UW_sH7E_rKI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/HJBt72Fiu-U/s400/DSCN3076.JPG" width="300" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">And they had fun too - here's what one student said <i>"Loved it! Had no idea going into class what to expect, but I am leaving truly inspired. Elaine is calm, fun and relaxed. Great learning experience!"</i> Okay ... I'm blushing....but aren't my students fabulous! I just love them!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I also had the chance to introduce <a href="http://www.zentangle.com/">Zentangle </a>as it applies to quilting. We start each class by making a traditional Zentangle tile - here's and example of some student work.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UzOCOURIHvc/UW_sFXLPGzI/AAAAAAAAAiM/kaUyif7ysEg/s1600/DSCN3073.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UzOCOURIHvc/UW_sFXLPGzI/AAAAAAAAAiM/kaUyif7ysEg/s400/DSCN3073.JPG" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">We then go on with drawing and quilting demo's to teach the student how to add "tangle" patterns to their quilting. Here are a couple of examples of Zentangle inspired quilting that I show the students.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">A great time! I'll tell you about the other classes later! I'm already looking forward to teaching at MQX Quilt Festival in 2014!</span></div>

No husband, daughter or dog. Just me and my creative stuff! </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">On my way to the beach I attended my first <a href="http://bostonmqg.blogspot.com/">Boston Modern Quilt guild</a> meeting. What a fabulous bunch of women! We met in an auto-body shop! Cool contrast with quilts and vintage cars all in the same industrial space! The Boston Modern Quilt guild is collecting quilt blocks to make quilts for those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings. The blocks are all blue, yellow, white and grey. The guild put the call out to the quilting community and they have collected over 700 blocks! I brought these two quilt tops home to machine quilt. Thanks to <a href="http://www.superiorthreads.com/">Superior Threads</a> who donated quilting thread!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ovl1HtiajuY/UZzPOCrfbiI/AAAAAAAAAkY/YrwdQTY1Kdg/s1600/DSCN3109.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ovl1HtiajuY/UZzPOCrfbiI/AAAAAAAAAkY/YrwdQTY1Kdg/s320/DSCN3109.JPG" width="240" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--TmRcU3x6jE/UZzPTRLmp-I/AAAAAAAAAkg/mWaQEOPLcL4/s1600/DSCN3107.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--TmRcU3x6jE/UZzPTRLmp-I/AAAAAAAAAkg/mWaQEOPLcL4/s320/DSCN3107.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Another project that the Modern Quilt Guilds are involved with is peace flags. Again the quilting community heard the call! Hundreds of peace flags have been created to as a memorial and healing message to those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings. The flags will be tied together and displayed in the courtyard at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from May 23 - June 16. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c_qhozevk6E/UZzMoqcyRuI/AAAAAAAAAjY/MI2a6ttZZQ8/s1600/942501_560329317323721_528345119_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c_qhozevk6E/UZzMoqcyRuI/AAAAAAAAAjY/MI2a6ttZZQ8/s320/942501_560329317323721_528345119_n.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"> </span><span style="font-size: large;">I delivered flags created by the Northampton Modern Quilt Guild to the Boston guild. </span><span style="font-size: large;">Prior to their trip to Boston they were displayed at <a href="http://beehivesewing.com/">Beehive Sewing</a> in Northampton.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6uwAbLSGjVs/UZzMVh2AA9I/AAAAAAAAAjQ/X1VXnfesLsA/s1600/970911_528516193876065_1985548578_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6uwAbLSGjVs/UZzMVh2AA9I/AAAAAAAAAjQ/X1VXnfesLsA/s320/970911_528516193876065_1985548578_n.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">And no guild meeting would be complete without show n' tell - here are some of the fabulous creations made by members.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then to the beach. I was so tired, I didn't really do much on Saturday night except settle in and look at my art supplies and stuff. On Sunday I started the day by working on this <a href="http://www.zentangle.com/">Zentangle</a> mandala. I colored it with <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/gelpen">Sakura Gelly Roll</a> pens - I was able to gradate the color with with a little water on a small paintbrush. </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">They I moved onto my <a href="http://www.janedavenport.com/workshops/draw-happy-mini-workshop/">Draw Happy</a> class. This is an online drawing and mixed media class. Here's how the piece developed. I was focused on the process and followed the teacher example very closely.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">At low tide I took a break for a walk on the beach. My house is just a few houses from either the ocean to the east or the bay to the west. I went to the ocean first but there was a strong wind coming off the water so it was waaaaay windy and cold. See those cold waves? </span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span><span style="font-size: large;">I went over to the bay where the wind was calmer. It's rocky on the bayside and I found some cool yellow glass nestled in the rocks. Some kids were collecting crabs - more fun than a video game! I walked down the pier hoping to snap a picture of the Boston skyline but it was in the fog.</span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then back to the project. I'm kind of pleased with the result - especially since it involved paint and I had an art teacher long long ago tell me to throw away my paint! HA - see I CAN paint!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">On Monday I worked on this mandala - again using the Gelly Roll pens and water. I'm not thrilled with this one but there it is. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />

<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Then a long long walk on the ocean beach. I forgot my camera so close you eyes and imagine 3 miles of sand and a gentle surf. The sun is shining and it's not too hot or too cold. You are one of maybe a dozen people and a few dogs enjoying the beach. ahhhh just what I needed.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">Now home again home again jigidy jig.</span><br />

<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">Lately I have been enjoying working in series. My latest series is inspired by the sunrises over Nantasket Beach in Hull Massachusetts. The pieces are 5" square (8" with matting). They are composed of fabric which I lay down improvisationally and secure with fusible products. I then layer with batting and muslin and quilt on a domestic (sit down) sewing machine. The quilting designs are inspired by Zentangle® patterns and I use several thread colors. </span></div>

On July 7th and 8th I participated in the <a href="http://www.hullartists.com/">Hull Artists Studio Tour</a>. This was a great event that featured 22 artists opening their studios to the public. I had a fabulous time showing my art quilts, Zentangle (TM) inspired art, and my original designed fabric pocketbooks and totes. This event occurs twice a summer and I'll be participating again on August 25th. Here are pictures of my "front room" all prettied up to show my work.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
This weeks <a href="http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/">Diva Challenge</a> is to use the new tangle Pea-nuckle. I decided to use it on one of my ready-to-tangle iPad cases! This was so much fun. I used Identipen markers in black, Fabrico marker in 181 cool gray, and Copic markers BG15 and BG10. I decided to fill the entire space with tangles but to work really big. On the first side I did three tangles - Mooka, Pea-nucke, and Tipple. A really nice thing happened at the transition between Mooka and Pea-nuckle - one of those happy accidents!<br />
If you haven't tangled on fabric yet you should give it a try! The way that the pen works with the weave of the fabric adds a texture and richness that's really fun to play with.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
On the fip-side I used to black Identipen marker and gray Fabrico marker. I used several tangles and again filled the entire space. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The <a href="http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/">Diva</a> challenge this week is to use the tangle pattern "Groovy" created by Eden Hunt. This pattern really brought out my dyslexia and it took some time to learn the pattern. I do like how it can create a woven effect if the wavy lines are touching. For the Zendala I altered the printed string somewhat to make three designs do a kind-of yin-yang thing in the center.I really like how the designs swirl in the center. I used Graphitint pencils in green and purple. <br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For this square tile I tried to keep it simple and to have the Groovy pattern look woven.</div>

They come as a set of 18 in a cute tin. Some are prestrung - divided into areas for you to create tangle patterns in - and some are plain. I 've been pondering making one of these tiles for about six weeks!<br />
<br />
This is what the tile looked like before - you can see that it's divided into interesting spaces. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CBa3oy01zIE/T6KPoPhcGTI/AAAAAAAAAJg/o0Tj7Z9UjMI/s1600/SCAN0060.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CBa3oy01zIE/T6KPoPhcGTI/AAAAAAAAAJg/o0Tj7Z9UjMI/s320/SCAN0060.JPG" width="308" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I combined my efforts by trying the round tile and doing the Diva challenge. The<a href="http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/"> Diva challenge</a> was to use only two tangle patterns "Hybred" and "Strircles". Here is the result.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EpaB1g8Ubhg/T6KRWPQZtUI/AAAAAAAAAJo/ulvPx267c3Y/s1600/SCAN0059.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" border="0" height="312" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-EpaB1g8Ubhg/T6KRWPQZtUI/AAAAAAAAAJo/ulvPx267c3Y/s320/SCAN0059.JPG" title="zendala" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
For this tile I used black and blue Pigma pen and shaded with Derwent Graphinte pencil. I found the Zendala process to be a little tedious. The spaces are small and it was hard not to start making tiny little designs that I would then need to repeat in the four quadrants. I do like the result though. I think I will try to make more Zendala but really try to keep the patterns bigger - and not worry about keeping the quadrants the same.<br />
<br />
<br />
If you want to try Zendala tiles they are available for purchase on my website: <a href="http://www.elainehuffman.com/">www.elainehuffman.com</a> - with free shipping!Elainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16008230938732555162noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2356018552375582619.post-13974832077687880362012-04-24T08:33:00.001-07:002012-04-24T08:35:18.334-07:00I'm Back!It seems like forever since I've blogged. There is so much I could blog about but I have not set aside the time to do it. Since my last blog I've spent part of spring break in Florida and the other part in Hull, Massachusetts; I chaperoned a 4 day middle school field trip to Philadelphia; I taught at<a href="http://www.mqxshow.com/"> MQX</a> in Providence RI; and I've been creating lots of pieces for the <a href="http://www.hullartists.com/">Hull Artists Studio Tours</a>. Oh and I got this cool new head shot taken by Stephen Gore at <a href="http://www.stephengorephotography.com/">Nantaskart Gallery</a>! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-flY1kmgA20s/T5bAoTGO1mI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/qdtMQWAyweo/s1600/Huffman_Elaine_catalog.JPG.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-flY1kmgA20s/T5bAoTGO1mI/AAAAAAAAAIQ/qdtMQWAyweo/s320/Huffman_Elaine_catalog.JPG.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Nice huh!<br />
<br />
In honor of Earth Day I'll share some nature inspired pieces. The first is Staccato Sunrise. This piece measures 37" x 35" and is inspired by the sunrises at Nantasket Beach. The sun is a mariners compass that I segmented to create motion. The sky, grass and beach are improvisationally pieced. The quilt has detailed Zentangle (r) inspired free motion quilting on it and beading.<br />

I only had to look as far as my kitchen....the McCormick Recipe Inspirations packaging is perfect! I found the recipie rather so-so but I'll keep the cardboard package for drawing.<br />

She felted and then stitched this circle. She said it reminded her of my Zentangles. I looked on the back and she made this piece on the aniversary of my mothers birthday. My mom died almost 20 years ago but I've been missing her lately. What a lovely gift. Lee's other work can been seen <a href="http://dancingcrowdesigns.com/">here.</a><br />

Well this really was a challenge - I found that I had to turn tile a lot to make up for my uncoordinated left hand!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8v1embr2egc/Tyf4rSEaKSI/AAAAAAAAAGE/e4mTyNvccRw/s1600/SCAN0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="315" sda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8v1embr2egc/Tyf4rSEaKSI/AAAAAAAAAGE/e4mTyNvccRw/s320/SCAN0005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>That was fun, sort of. I don't really feel like doing another one though!<br />
<br />
Last Saturday I had a group of Certified Zentangle Teachers (CZT) at my house to network, learn, and socialize. We had a great time! Plans are already in motion to get together again!<br />
<br />
Here's the group!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pkWs16--rFw/Tyf6UdxTAoI/AAAAAAAAAGM/TN_ffNJ4PiI/s1600/DSCN2254-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pkWs16--rFw/Tyf6UdxTAoI/AAAAAAAAAGM/TN_ffNJ4PiI/s320/DSCN2254-1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And we had a surprise visitor - Maria Thomas - co-founder of <a href="http://www.zentangle.com/">Zentange (r) </a>!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I gave a short demo on how to machine quilt tangle patterns. A very mini-version of the <a href="http://www.elainehuffman.com/">class</a> I'll be teaching at <a href="http://www.mqxshow.com/MQX/East/2012Classes/ClassCalendar/SaturdayApril14/index.cfm?semID=3119&view=1&requesttimeout=600">MQX in Providence RI</a> this April. I gave people a chance to try out the longarm sewing machine - it's harder than it looks! Here's Maria trying her hand at the longarm.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K4Ww-RBx3uY/TygXybVL1TI/AAAAAAAAAGc/nxAW7av-90s/s1600/DSCN2256.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" sda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-K4Ww-RBx3uY/TygXybVL1TI/AAAAAAAAAGc/nxAW7av-90s/s320/DSCN2256.JPG" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.decorativeartistry.us/">Jeanne Paglio</a> showed us how to make tangled earrings. Here are the ones I made - I'm going to make more of these earrings - it was so fun!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AeV6J1JYmgg/TygjrkbBYVI/AAAAAAAAAG0/05Dr_GsEqAA/s1600/DSCN2267.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" sda="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AeV6J1JYmgg/TygjrkbBYVI/AAAAAAAAAG0/05Dr_GsEqAA/s320/DSCN2267.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We also heard from Dr. Meredith Yuhas on the clinical study she is conducting on Zentangle. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I've been hard at work in the studio this week making earrings and planning some awesome quilting projects. I've also spent some time on marketing my sewing patterns - you can check them out <a href="http://www.elainehuffman.com/">here</a>. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">And..... on Monday I'll annouce a great giveaway!</div>Elainehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16008230938732555162noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2356018552375582619.post-27556031086531512222012-01-29T11:06:00.000-08:002012-01-29T11:06:23.549-08:00Go Purple<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">I took a class at <a href="http://www.quiltsandtreasuresinc.com/">Quilts and Treasures in East Longmeadow MA</a> where we made baskets by wrapping fabric around clothesline rope and sewing it together. Well – that was not only fun but very addictive.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I made this basket during the class (I got extra credit for the ric-rac –ha ha!) </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OrkrPEyncnE/TyWFrVYAMhI/AAAAAAAAAE8/Ids5DbiJO4U/s1600/DSCN2246.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gda="true" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OrkrPEyncnE/TyWFrVYAMhI/AAAAAAAAAE8/Ids5DbiJO4U/s320/DSCN2246.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Then I started to make this little one. My daughter wants me to finish it and give it to her!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-11WNODH749k/TyWGfnU2T3I/AAAAAAAAAFE/7y02xYXDWBU/s1600/DSCN2247.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" gda="true" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-11WNODH749k/TyWGfnU2T3I/AAAAAAAAAFE/7y02xYXDWBU/s320/DSCN2247.JPG" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"></td></tr>
</tbody></table></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: left;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Then I kind of got carried away and started to make a beach bag out of just rope – purple rope! I’ve used two spools of rope – that’s 150 feet of rope folks, and it measures<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>about 16 x 7 x 3. My daughter links I should add a lime green stripe – should I?</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Us_Ej-JkplM/TyWU0ck_orI/AAAAAAAAAF8/B64HubTd6cs/s1600/DSCN2248.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" gda="true" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Us_Ej-JkplM/TyWU0ck_orI/AAAAAAAAAF8/B64HubTd6cs/s320/DSCN2248.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin: 0in 0in 10pt; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">All of this basketry is cutting into my quilting and tangling time. But I got back at it. The<a href="http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/"> Diva</a> challenge recently was to add purple to your tangles. Here’s a page from my sketch book with a couple of purple tangles on it. I used Prismacolor pencils for the purple.</span><br />
<br />

The challenge was to use your preferred paper size and draw the tangles bigger. This was my favorite biggified tangle. I use the standard 3 ½” square <a href="http://www.zentangle.com/">Zentangle®</a> tiles. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">I like to translate <a href="http://www.elainehuffman.com/Pleasant_valley_quilting.html">Zentangle style into quilting</a>. I took the biggified tangle enlarged it a little more and then made a mini-wholecloth quilt. The quilted piece measures 5 ½” square. It is made from fabric, Signature 100% cotton thread – in rust and variegated rust, and two layers of batting. This is the finished piece.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">This weeks <a href="http://iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com/%20challenge">Diva</a> Challenge is to take your regular sized tangle paper and draw the actual tangle on it BIGGER than usual! I use the standard Zentangle ® 3 ½ inch square paper tiles. I did the challenge a couple of times before coming up with something I liked. On one of my earlier attempts I used a <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Pen-Archival">Pigma Graphic</a> 1 instead of my usual <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Pen-Archival">Pigma Micron 01</a>. I thought that since the tangles would be bigger that the pen should be bigger also….wrong. (So wrong that I tossed the tile!)</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">On this tile I used three tangles, Poke-root, Shattuck, and Flux. I like how bold it looks. I think that perhaps I draw my tangles on the larger side anyway but drawing them very large required a steady hand and deeper concentration!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qoW9CjZFcto/Ttjt-XbBbXI/AAAAAAAAADk/iQjMub9vrcY/s1600/SCAN0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qoW9CjZFcto/Ttjt-XbBbXI/AAAAAAAAADk/iQjMub9vrcY/s320/SCAN0001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">On this tile I decide to be brave and draw those large “orbs” – I’m being careful not to call them circles because – they are drawn freehand and not meant to be perfect circles. But none-the-less I did try to concentrate and get them pretty round….. Then perhaps I made a mistake. I started coloring with <a href="http://www.prismacolor.com/home">Prismacolor Water Color pencils</a>. I guess this wasn’t totally a bad idea but when I added brushstrokes with water, the color became brighter than expected. I’m going to experiment more with the water color pencils – I am starting to like a little color with my Zentangle ®.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L_hOvEQecnQ/TtjuKnCOgcI/AAAAAAAAADs/9DYYnKu3cQQ/s1600/SCAN0002+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" dda="true" height="310" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L_hOvEQecnQ/TtjuKnCOgcI/AAAAAAAAADs/9DYYnKu3cQQ/s320/SCAN0002+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If you're wondering where to get supplies for Zentangle(r) art. I get my pens and pencils from <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/?wmcp=msn&wmckw=dick%20blick&wmcid=msn01">Dick Blick</a> and I have the official Zentangle(r) supplies availble on my <a href="http://www.elainehuffman.com/">website</a>.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />

This challenge was presented by a guest tangler <span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 10pt;"><a href="http://tangledupinart.blogspot.com/"><span style="color: blue;">Cris Letourneau CZT</span></a>.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Her challenge supports<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><a href="http://redthreadpromise.blogspot.com/">The Red Thread Promise</a> organization. The challenge is to create a black and white tile<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>with a red thread running through it. Tiles can be donated to an auction to benefit The Red Thread Promise.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TNdk99s9o84/TtI-NROIieI/AAAAAAAAADc/4XySC5PU89g/s1600/DSCN2193.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" hda="true" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TNdk99s9o84/TtI-NROIieI/AAAAAAAAADc/4XySC5PU89g/s320/DSCN2193.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>I used one of my favorite tangles - Cadent (left side) then I added two tangles that I had never done before. The red thread is Vega - I think it looks more like a rock climbing rope or fancy drapery trim! I enjoyed using the red but thought it needed black too. Then I couldn't decide if I should shade with regular pencil or use colored pencil. I used regular pencil and I think it looks good! The third tangle is Jetties. I did that one with black <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Pen-Archival">Pigma pen</a> and with white <a href="http://www.sakuraofamerica.com/Pen-Archival">Gel pen</a>. I like how the orbs look like they are going to roll right off the tile! <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />

We woke up to no heat or hot water! My husband and a buddy “jump started” the furnace and got it working but not fixed. So I did have heat and hot water for the day but it was a stressful way to begin! </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 10pt;"></span><span style="color: black; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 10pt;">I had decided to cook the turkey a different way. This year I brined the turkey. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Here’s how it worked. That darn turkey bird is sat in a spa bath of cider and spices for 2 days and had to be turned over periodically. After it was done in the brine I had to, rinse it, pat it dry and then let it rest for an hour before cooking! Really! <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The bird needs to rest after sitting around in a spa bath for 2 days? <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Well I had to get up real early to allow enough time for the <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">bird to rest</i></b><i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">! </i><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I have to say – that was the best turkey I’ve ever had!
